The Great Peace of Montreal

Skennen’kó:wa Gathering is a community-centred cultural gathering that highlights the Great Peace of Montréal of 1701 by bringing Indigenous presence, knowledge, and living traditions back to the Old Port-where history was made. Through immersive, hands-on experiences, the gathering invites participants of all backgrounds to learn, connect, and embody the values of Skén:nen (Peace).

Rather than simply commemorating history, the gathering creates space for reconciliation through relationship, cultural exchange, and shared experience. Visitors will engage with traditional land-based teachings and demonstrations including tea making with local medicines, lacrosse demonstrations, social dancing, smoke dancing, clay pot cooking over an open fire, traditional corn pounding, black ash basket weaving, and wampum belt weaving. These activities highlight the ingenuity, connection, and enduring cultural practices of the First Nations while fostering meaningful dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

Food, movement, art, and storytelling become pathways to understanding, reminding participants that peace is not merely an agreement of the past, but an ongoing practice rooted in respect, reciprocity, and responsibility to one another and the land.
