The Victoria Plaque: A treasured piece of heritage now newly restored!
Come connect with history and visit a special, newly initiated heritage project designed to shine new light on the Victoria Plaque. This historical plaque was placed on September 28, 1916, to commemorate the inauguration of the Victoria Quay, known today as Clock Tower Quay. This treasured heritage plaque was relocated and restored in 2024 and is now accented by a beautiful mural inspired by the banners and flags flown from the ships surrounding the port on the quay’s inauguration day. These flags were not chosen at random. They carry a message. Try to decode it by matching each flag to a letter using the international maritime signal flag system!
This artwork recalls the colours and festivities of quay’s inauguration day in 1916 when His Royal Highness Prince Arthur, son of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and governor general of Canada, unveiled this famous landmark plaque before an enthusiastic crowd. More than 110 years later, the Old Port is still a vibrant gathering place for festivities and celebration! Look for the marine rope icons on the ground and come discovery this piece of heritage!
